Report: ECW Brand To Be Shut Down In Early 2010

Posted on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 4:55 pm

The ECW brand will be put to rest once and for all in the near future.

According to a reliable source, WWE officials have had several meetings with the Syfy network about re-branding WWE’s Tuesday night show. Both sides are in agreement that WWE’s version of ECW has been a bust and plans are already being made for a new weekly series. While several ideas have been tossed around (including a magazine-style recap show), right now the most likely option is that WWE will drop the ECW letters and “identity” (whatever that is) and create a new brand that will feature young and-and-coming stars. The Tuesday night timeslot will likely stay the same.

WWE relaunched the ECW brand back in 2006 after the undeniable success of the “Rise and Fall of ECW” DVD set and later the ECW One Night Stand Pay-Per-View events. After ECW was relaunched as a brand, it quickly became apparent that WWE had no intention of keeping the elements that made the original ECW special and turned ECW into a watered-down, generic “C” show. The first week of ECW on Syfy back in 2006 drew around a 2.8. These days a 1.1 is considered a good week.

While it may be bittersweet to see the ECW letters go, ECW has been dead for a long time and a brand featuring primarily young stars sounds like it has potential.

Stay tuned for the latest.

– Changes to Smackdown:

It’s been reported this week that major changes are coming to WWE in the early months of 2010, with the ECW brand likely being shut down. According to a report on PWInsider.com, WWE also has big changes in store for the SmackDown brand. The feeling is that Raw has enhanced its identity with the Guest Host concept and SmackDown needs something of its own to stand out. While nothing official has been decided on yet, it’s believed that any big changes will take place after year ends.

Finally, ECW is getting put out of its misery.

Yeah, ECW has been crap for a while now. The only reason I still watch was for Shelton, Cristian, Goldust, Ryder and Katie Lea. I just hope none of them get shafted in the switch.

Legendary.

If ECW is on it's last leg, you can say goodbye to the future of the WWE. I don't see writers or Vince taking the time out to review gimmicks and scripts for new Wrestlers. I mean on Smackdown it's only worked once this year. Eric Escobar is a failure of a "handpicked" future star.

Funny too because apparently Bryan Danielson is supposed to be heading to ECW.

It's been officially announced that ECW will end on February 23. May it rest in peace.

To be replaced with NXT. Of course, there is a company over in Scotland which already uses those initials.

The main problem is that Vince won't let Creative move up the next wave of main event stars. He's sticking with the same people over and over again. Ok, that's fine if you don't have anyone even close to being ready. Understandable. But now he's got a whole bunch where they're either ready to have a rocket strapped to their backs or they've been pushed and stopped so often it's aggravating to long time fans.

Please just let this be another Superstars like show. They should just let it be Raw and SmackDown!. We don't need another brand.

It wouldn't matter. They couldn't use the letters in Scotland or they'd face getting sued again. Or for that matter, they may not be able to period. You know Vince wasn't happy he lost the court battle to the World Wildlife Fund. He could easily pay them for the use of the old logo, but you know him, not willing to let go of a grudge.

Very true. However the articles have stated that WWE has TRADEMARKED the NXT name. Therefore, even if the Scotish organization was using it first, they clearly didnt have it trademarked. If they did, then they need to sue the copyright office for screwing up, not WWE for trying to further it's business.

Plus, I highly doubt the copyright office would have let Vince Trademark the name if someone already had. I think the Scotish organization lost out because they didnt follow through. But then again I'm not sure exactly how International Copyrights work.

Right, it could just be a copyright here in the US and the show itself won't be going on any overseas tours. Although how they would tape episodes while taping Smackdown overseas, I don't know.
