FROM BRUCE WAYNE’S PRIVATE FILES IN THE BATCOMPUTER
Unearthed by C.A. TURNER
BATMAN
[/B]I have been preparing myself for this enterprise since the moment I saw my parents’ blood. While the process of training and study will never cease, I finally decided that it was time to take what I had learned thus far and create a new image and identity, an alter ego to Bruce Wayne’s daytime persona. I was in my father’s library, reliving that terrible night of senseless violence, recalling how the loss of my parents affected me, pondering how I might prevent their fate from befalling others, when my thoughts were invaded by horror. The window exploded, shattered by a hideously terrifying shred of darkness, perhaps sent by fate, but certainly rabid. I was inspired to recreate it-in human form, my form, as my new image and identity. The most frightening criminal is cowardly and superstitious at heart, secretly afraid of the very darkness he attempts to exploit…and the bat is the night.
I have been privileged to work with the finest men and women who also fight for justice…the Justice League of America. Recently, we have added some younger members to the team: the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and their protégés: the ThunderCats. Together, the Justice League is more powerful than ever, and still strives to uphold truth and justice.
Alone or with the League, I have done everything in my power to keep Gotham’s streets free of blood, to prevent my parents’ fate from recurring. I have often failed, but I have also known success. Whatever I have accomplished could not be done by day, when the shadows retreat, and evil hides from the light. It is a nocturnal pursuit that can only succeed only if I am of the darkness and more dangerous by far. My true cause must ever be masked by the very shadows in which evil dwells and on which evil eternally feeds. Those who create fear know fear most intimately and are most susceptible to its power. They are predators in constant terror of becoming prey. It is my business to inspire this terror.
And so, the design of my life has shaped into one design, incorporating elements of all the others to create a single force with but one purpose. And in the service of alien light, it is to this final dark design that I commit my life and my soul.
WONDER WOMAN.
Her name is Princess Diana. Sometimes she hides her nature and identity, if such a thing were possible, under the name of Diana Prince. By combat and contest, she was chosen to represent an island nation of Amazon women who claim to be descendants of the Olympian Gods. Along with Black Canary, she was one of the first female members of the Justice League of America, and lives not to fight, but to work for peace. It is a mistake many make to categorize her as a warrior. She is far more than her training and skill suggest.
Evidence of her divine lineage includes a number of gifts, like those in myth, given by the gods. She carries a “Golden Lasso.” It is unbreakable, and those confined by it are compelled to speak the truth. It’s nature, by my inspection, is not scientific, but mysterious. I can find no reason for its properties. She wears bulletproof bracelets that she uses to defend herself, is nearly as fast as the Flash, as strong as Superman, and even though she can fly, she has an invisible jet that allows her to travel the globe undetected, even by radar or heat sensitive tracking devices.
Some have suggested that she is a perfect woman. And it is easy to see why popular speculation would see her as a possible mate for Superman. But, I do not believe such a pairing ever to be possible. She understands too well the role we have chosen. She knows, unlike many in the League itself, that we cannot risk loved ones. They could become targets, our vulnerabilities.
GREEN LANTERN.
Hal Jordan was a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, and is now once more a Captain in the United States Air Force, stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, who has gone faster, farther, and higher than anything he could ever hope or dream. Of all the members of the Justice League, of all of those who wield strange powers, he himself has concerns about his abilities, and it is no surprise that I share those concerns.
Years ago, he was given a ring by a dying alien. The ring was powered by another world’s energy source. It allows Hal to create, through both imagination and willpower, whatever he desires. With it, he can fly, form giant objects to be used as weapons or tools, or survive the rigors of space. His is not the only ring; he is a member of the Green Lantern Corps. This alien league polices the universe, and they are led by a race known as the Guardians.
The ring’s charge lasts only about twenty four hours. This, Hal admits, is its only true weakness, its yellow vulnerability having been eliminated recently. But, Hal sometimes forgets that he himself is a weakness. I have seen him as a hero who has saved this world countless times, and can attest that his willpower is the result of discipline, wisdom, and of his Air Force training. However, when the alien gave him the ring, it chose Hal because it was believed that he was fearless.
It has been my experience that fear is a necessary trait in those who would do what we do. Fear of loss. Fear of corruption. Fear of what the world will become if we don’t succeed.
BLACK CANARY
Dinah Laurel Lance is the Black Canary, but, if her mother had her way, this is not the life she would lead. Her mother, the first Black Canary, was a costumed adventurer who forbade her daughter to follow her path. However, Dinah was always strong willed, and tried to train anyway. When her Sonic Scream, a powerful voice that can shatter wood, glass, or stone manifested itself, that choice was taken out of her mother’s hands…and placed firmly in her own.
Despite her rebellious nature with her mother, Dinah began fighting crime out of human empathy. However, she became more than human when she helped found the Justice League of America, searching for something that passed for stability and community. Her relationship with green arrow has been vital to both of them. Both lost their worlds. While I normally consider relationships a hindrance to our mission, this relationship gives her strength. Together, Black Canary and Green Arrow have fought against local crime as well as the interplanetary variety we often face in the Justice League.
Dinah also ran a local business, as manager of a flower shop. Her relationship with those whose lives she has saved over and over again is therefore closer than perhaps anyone else in the League. She doesn’t merely save the city; she lives within it and its people.
HAWKMAN & HAWKWOMAN.
Katar Hol & Shayera Thal were the equivalent of police on their home planet of Thanagar. Husband and wife, they came to Earth in pursuit of a criminal from their own planet. To them, crime is a disease, one that all but destroyed their once prison-free world. This disease was like a cancer; it spread. Attempting to contain it brought them to Earth.
It was here that they adopted the roles of Hawkman and Hawkwoman, recognizing humanity’s willingness to accept an alien super hero more quickly than an alien manhunter. Katar and Shayera quickly altered the pronunciation of their names to fit human dialects, becoming Carter and Shiera Hall, and members of the Justice League of America.
Both can fly at great speeds due to artificial wings and antigravity belts. While they have a Thanagarian ship filled with weapons hidden just outside Earth’s orbit, it is their study of Earth’s history and weaponry that has become their primary passion. Carter and Shiera act as co-directors of the St Roch Museum, a cover set up by their human policeman ally, Commissioner George Emmett.
Perhaps the driving imperative for why Carter and Shiera remain on Earth is this; they remember a time before there was crime on their world. They can envision what this world might look like should crime be eliminated. For me, this notion seems to be impossible. Still, if it is not possible, why do we fight? Is it just to keep the world from becoming impossibly corrupt?
ISIS
It is amazing how one trip to an ancient civilization on an expedition can change your life. Andrea Thomas is living proof of this. While on an excavation of a tomb of the only female Pharaoh, Queen Hatsepsut, Andrea was digging at a secluded spot and discovered an amulet shaped as cow’s horns holding a moon disk; the legend of the Egyptian goddess of Earth and fertility: Isis. Andrea used the amulet as a super hero, becoming the world’s only living goddess, only recently joining the Justice League of America.
It is a mistake many make to categorize her in the same realm as Zatanna. Her magical powers are limited, and she generally needs a conduit to ground her magic, whereas Isis, being a goddess, has no such limitations except those put upon herself. Potentionally the most powerful member of the Justice League while on Earth, Isis has put limits on her abilities and powers as to keep herself from becoming too powerful. I applaud this decision, for absolute power corrupts, and she recognizes this. Her fighting ability has grown at an amazing speed during her time in the League thus far, able to give some of our top fighters a real workout. Still, despite all of this, it is her talent for manipulating the odds in the Justice League’s favor that makes her invaluable.
FLASH
Barry Allen was the kind of man I would have hoped to become had my parents not been murdered before my eyes, and Wally West has since tried to become. Wally is a mechanic for the Central City Police Department. His uncle, Barry, was a forensic scientist. These days, they would be called CSI’s. Like Barry, there is no shadow on his record or his past. And when he is the Flash, he may move too fast to even cast a shadow.
Years ago, Wally was visiting his uncle in his laboratory when the same accident that gave Barry his superspeed happened to him. A bolt of lightning struck certain chemicals in a nearby cabinet, as well as Wally. The composition of the chemicals had been changed, transforming for a second time, a human into a being who could move at super human speed. Like Barry could, there is now no place Wally cannot be in seconds, no foe he cannot outrun or outrace. Both have trained themselves to vibrate their molecules at such a high velocity that they can pass through walls and even step into different dimensions and eras.
Having started first as Kid Flash, and inheriting the role of the Flash from Barry, Wally works with both the Justice League and the New Teen Titans. Like Barry, Wally is married…to a reporter. Her name is Linda. Unlike Barry, they have two newborn babies.
As our identities must be guarded at all costs, the same applies to our families. The exposure of one is the exposure of both.
MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/THUNDERCATS
I remember my first encounter with these young heroes from Angel Grove, and, am ashamed to admit, I remember my first opinion of their capabilities. I had been pleasantly surprised when I had heard that they had succeeded and had to admit that when it came to fighting demons they were more than capable. However, against the twisted evil of the human mind though I wasn't so sure at first. At that time, I thought, there was a good chance that the teenagers would soon find themselves out of their depth, but I had hoped for their sakes they were as strong as their costumes made them appear. As it turns out, they are more than up for the challenge, and are just as dedicated to the fight as any of us in the Justice League of America.
Like my own wards, Dick Grayson, and Tim Drake, the Power rangers have fought the worst villains this universe has thrown at them…and are still in the game. Jason Lee Scott, Tommy Oliver, Trini Kwan, Zachary Taylor, Kimberly Hart, Samantha Dean, and Billy Cranston have protected Angel grove for almost a decade now, and are about to graduate from college, having taken on the role of mentors for a similar team: the ThunderCats. Both Jason & Tommy are guiding Keith Partridge, Laurie, Keith’s sister, is under Kimberly’s wing, Chris, their baby brother, is Zachary’s protégé, Tracy, the youngest Partridge, is being counseled by Trini, and Billy is guiding Bill Engvall. The Partridges’ middle brother, Danny, was not chosen, for reasons that were only recently made clear to us. Billy, in fact, is also a Green Lantern.
Despite their dedication, I would still urge these young heroes to try and live normal lives. Bill, however, is the oldest of the bunch, about to turn 40, and is trying to help them lead normal lives…as normal as possible with the lives we lead. I have found out, aside from the Zeo team who works with the New Teen Titans, the Geo team working with Young Justice, and of course, the League’s team of Rangers and ThunderCats, there are several others: Lightstar(Space), Lightspeed rescue, Time Force (from the Legion Of Super Heroes timeframe), Wild Force, Dino Thunder, Mystic Force, Operation Overdrive, and now Jungle Fury. I have even heard rumors of a team of Lost Galaxy Rangers…and in the not too distant future…SPD. I have even heard rumblings of another team of Rangers…RPM.
And they say teenagers have no community spirit. After meeting these teams, I would like to tell these people just how wrong they are.
I promise to add Martian Manhunter, Atom, Red Arrow, the Titans and the Zeo Rangers at a later date.
