What are some of the battles that really show what it takes to be a power ranger?
The Psycho Rangers were some of the baddest villains in all of TV history. If Astroma had focused more on using them to destroy the rangers than draining Dark Specter's energy, we'd all be polishing a Quanitron's boots right about now. Their shear brutality is just one of the things that saved the franchise.
Korrag was one of the series' best characters. He beat the rangers several times and refused to destroy them. All in the sake of honor. It's easier to be evil than it is to be good. Evil-doers generally have no morals or anything holding them back. Korrag and his sense of honor is a brilliant display of a villain you want to root for.

Well I'm gonna state the obvious answer: Countdown to Destruction. The Rangers were outmatched and outgunned but kept on fighting, while facing an evil invasion.

So yeah, gotta agree and start with the obvious, "Countdown to Destruction" definitely starts this thing off for the sheer magnitude of the battle that spanned a few galaxies actually. This definitely shows just what type of life you're accepting when you don the multi-colors.
"Green With Evil" is another of those fights where it shows just how rough things can get as a ranger, especially when you've got no mentor there guiding you along and it's still somewhere around your first six months on the job.
"Chase into Space" is clearly another battle that can completely change your mind about the whole superhero thing. Not many people come that close to death and live to talk about it.
The Psycho Ranger fights obviously make this list and they take the fear and dangerousness that the Green Ranger brought and amplifies it.
I can't remember the name of the episode, but where Kendrix gets killed by Psycho Pink, that would definitely make the average person think twice before accepting any morphers.

LG against the Titanisaur was a pretty tough battle.

I don't think you can get any tougher than the battles depicted in "Chase into Space" and "Countdown to Destruction", although here are a few that, IMO, have come pretty close:
* Wes and Eric's 'last stand' in 'The End of Time'
* Leo's one-on-one with the combined form of Trakeena and Deviot in 'Journey's End'
* Tommy fighting for his life against Turbanshell in 'Green No More'
* The Rangers' Zord battles with Pirantis Head in 'The Mutiny'

The battles I make up are pretty tough:
Fanfic series Power Rangers Techno: the rangers(who are all freshman in high school) have to fight a goddess/robot the transform anything with electricity turned and attacked humans. Giant skyscrapers being turned into a giant mechanical snake) then again the rangers had help with the american army... and they cant morph
Fanfic Power Rangers Dragon Riders (give credit to JDF, a user of this board)
Two rangers had an evil power of a demonic king to rule over all monsters awaken and they start to fight to see who would be would ran supreme. So they other rangers follow them into space force to brutality murder there friends in order to keep the underworld and the human world apart.
Just to name my few

Every one pretty uch mentioned CTD and Pcyho rangers.
I say A-Squad as well because they were kicking B-squad butts for a while.
The battle with Thrax as he did temporarily destroy their link to the morphing grid.

I'll go right along and do a top 5.
5. Psycho Ranger battle: The Psychos are everything they are but exactly the opposite and twice as powerful. As stated by Andros to Leo. The Psycho rangers have 2 main claims one is that their abilities are some of the best for example Psycho yellow showed that a Megazord could easily be controlled by them when she took control of the Mega Voyager. While Psycho pink as the claim to have lead to the event to a death of a Ranger even if the Ranger did return at the end of LG.
4. Chase into Space: Divatox had already destroyed both of their Megazords. The Command Center was destroyed the one true lost for the Rangers. Though they did not stay down for long they actually went out of this world.
3. Journey's End: Millions of Suicidal sting Wingers atatcking the space Colony and a Newly bugged out Trekeena who also absorbed Deviot. 2 Megazords were destroyed and Leo almost died in a very suicidal attack. Much like the one Carter did to take down Demonite.
2. Ransik: He whooped them good, really nothing I can add. They only won because he surrendered.
1. C2D: Obvious I mean they were out matched so badly and not only were they attacked but everyone else in the Universe. Plus each of the rangers villains up to the ones from In Space were in the assault. Zordon proofed to be the most powerful being in the Power Ranger Universe even when at half his original power. With only pockets of evil surviving his waive.

The best end-battles are against villains who have gone insane.
Examples
CTD (Space): Astronema went nuts after the person she was programmed to obey (Darkspecter) died and now she's Ruler of the Universe. CTD is widely regarded as the most dramatic moment in PR history.
Journey's End (LG): Trakeena went insane after Deviot forcibly merged with her in the cocoon. First she sent her ENTIRE ARMY on a suicide mission, then she killed the one person loyal to her (I'm pretty sure Villemax was in love with Trakeena) and fought a Ranger to the point that he BLED.
Fate of Lightspeed (LR): IMO, Bansheera was psychotic from Day One. Killing off those who were unconditionally loyal to her (including her own son) is a sure sign of madness (See Journey's End). Two Megazords were destroyed before the final even began, then the Rangers had to destroy the others (along with the base) because the villains had THAT MUCH of an advantage that the mecha was commandeered. Carter went into Hell to keep her down, and even then Diabolico had to lend a hand.
End of Time (TF): Ransik was driven over the edge after Frax lost. Frax, after all, did save his life. If Ransik hadn't accidentally attacked his daughter...let's just say there wouldn't have been much left of the world for WF to save.
Thunder Struck (DT): This features not one, but two insane villains at the end. Zeltrax's irrational hatred of Tommy (You blew yourself up, Get over it) signifies his madness. His Zelzord was so strong the Rangers had to self-destruct the majority of their Zords to stop him, and then they fought the Mesomonster, with Mercer (the stabilizing force in Mesogog) no longer a part of him, he was absolutely crazy. Again, complete power sacrifice was necessary to stop him.

These are great guys :) What else do we have?
Now the Final Fury: The rangers have to fight all of the monsters they destroyed throughout the season. It's 12 VS at least 70 monsters and rin-shi. Those aren't the best odds. It's not as large scale as C2D, but this time they couldn't kill Zordon.
The Cobra Strikes: The rangers now face Troika, after having a difficult time (to put it litly) with the three monsters that it was composed of. Diabolico takes matters into his own hands and blows a friggin' hole in the Supertrain megazord! Ryan is in the battle of his life where if he stays morphed for too long, he'll die. Then just when they think they won, BOOM! Olympius arises and ruins their hopes for a vacation.
Curse of the Wolf: Zen-Aku single handedly beats the snot out of the rangers. To add insult to injury, he steals their zords and combines them with his own.

You know I had forgotten about this one, but a battle that probably tops them all, even C2D. From the two part episode " The Island of Illusion." The only thing worse than fighting a powerful, vicious space alien is fighting yourself. Having to face what you fear and doubt yourself about the most is already a tough task for anybody, to have to do it in front of your best friends and before you fade away into nothing is an entirely different story and I can admire all six of the original crew for overcoming that situation.
