Seriously, what were they good for? I realize the alien rangers needed zords, but what was the point when they would just call upon the Shogun zords to finish them off? They just seemed like rip-offs of the shogun zords that could not combine or destroy a monster. Thoughts?

They had the Battle Borgs before they had the Shogunzords.

They had the Battle Borgs before they had the Shogunzords.
That's not even close to being correct. The Shogunzords first appeared in Changing of the Zords and the Battle Borgs appeared with the alien rangers in Alien Rangers of Aquitar, at least 10 episodes later. Even in the Kakuranger source footage, the Shogunzords came first, then the Battle Borgs, then the Falconzord, and finally the ninjazords.

The alien Rangers had the Battle Borgs before they had access to the Shogunzords. Last I checked, the MMAR weren't in Changing of the Zords.
And referencing Kakuranger means nothing when we're talking about PR.

Question is right. The Alien Rangers had the Battle Borgs to themselves before anyway.
The Ancient Zords, or Shogunzords to give it it's correct dubbed term, were LOST. Literally lost, somewhere, and had to be unearthed, they were considered gone or forgotten, lost, meaning NO ONE had them.
Zedd managed to find them and, after the Ninjazord became useless for a while, Zedd was going to force the others to use them to destroy Angel Grove while Kim remained captive. Once Kim was free, there was no danger, and the Rangers decided to use the Zords were good.
Simply put, the Earth Rangers were the FIRST Rangers to use the Shogunzords after... a very, very, very long time. Maybe the Alien Rangers' ancestors used them at some point, explaining the similarity in Ranger technology and compatability, but NOT the generation we see in MMAR.
The Alien Rangers only had the Battle Borgs when we first see them. Although it's safe to presume they could access the Ninja Zords and Shogun Zords, they didn't OWN them.
So when they found they needed extra power, Zordon allowed them to call upon the Earth Rangers' Zords, which are more powerful.
But I agree that the Battle Borgs were pretty useless. But the Alien Rangers needed Zords, and what with the Rangers using the Shogunzords and Ninjazords to actually combat a threat rather than (like the Alien Rangers) having zords just for the sake of having them, to give a shared control to the Alien Rangers before they entered in MMAR to help Earth would have been inpractical.
Maybe when the Earth Rangers activated their Zeo powers, the Ninjazords and Shogunzords were given to the Alien Rangers... but that's speculation.

I thought you were talking in terms of the whole 3rd season (including MMAR), not in terms of just MMAR. My bad:o
I'm just wondering why the alien rangers would even bring their zords to Earth if they could just use the Earth rangers Shogunzords to begin with. Was it just done to show that the Alien rangers had zords?

If we're allowed to reference Kakuranger, I'm just going to say Sentai footage.
Otherwise, they were probably just used to the Battle Borgs. I thought they were pretty cool anyway.

Maybe the monsters they fought on Earth were stronger than what they were used to.
Or maybe because they were dehydrated, their efforts going into the Battle Borgs' ability in combat was reduced, so they needed the Shogunzords.
Maybe they thought the Battle Borgs would be enough before they left for Earth.
Maybe, in Aquatar, they're more powerful.

I guess so, but seemed like faster versions of the shogunzords. Minus the abilities to combine into a megazord or deliver a finishing move. No wonder they could never defeat the Hydro Hog.

If you watch starting at the 6:00 mark you will see that the battle borgs have a finisher.

The finisher is the red one being thrown by the other four.

Alright point taken about their finisher, but still no megazord combination.
Question

Why would they need to combine?
I liked how the Battle Borgs were sleeker, more agile versions of the Shogunzords, though I did enjoy the Shogun Megazord's finisher more than I enjoyed the Battle Borgs' finisher.

The Battle Borgs are to the Shogunzords what Storm Megazord-Lightning Mode was to the normal Storm Megazord.

Combined zords tend to be more powerfull.

That has got to be the best was to look at them.

Well yeah. When it's zords that have the ability to combine. There's never been anything to suggest that that a Megazord is more powerful than any machine it comes up against that isn't a bunch of combined robots. I can't think of a Megazord more powerful than Pyrimads, that thing wasn't always combined with the Zeo Zords. The Alien Rangers seemed to do pretty well on Aquitar using just the Battle Borgs. As long as they destroy monsters (which we saw them do) what does it matter if they combine or not? Besides all that, had they not brought them Billy wouldn't have learned about telepathically linking the zords with the rangers like he implemented into the Red Battlezord.

Combined zords tend to be more powerfull.
Dragonzord was pretty equal to the Megazord. The Tigerzord was pretty equal to the Thunder Megazord.
Red Battlezord. Mega Winger. Time Shadow Megazord. And others I'm too lazy to list.
Combining isn't necessarily more powerful.

I feel the same way, though when I was younger I couldn't help but feel they were weaker looking but still bad azz.

The first time we saw the Alien Rangers use the Battleborgs was the first time we saw the Alien Rangers battle.
Remember, Cestro said "I've never seen so many mutants in the one general area before." So, the way I see it, their Battleborgs had done just FINE against the monsters the Hydro Hog had sent to battle them on Aquitar.
HOWEVER, they had never battled so many monsters at once. So obviously their battleborgs weren't enough AGAINST SO MANY MONSTERS. Hence why the kid rangers called for the Shogun Megazord to help them out.
The reason why they weren't used much afterwards was because Zedd put a protective barrier around the Earth which prevented the Alien Rangers from accessing their Battleborgs while on Earth.
