Should older Sentai seasons be made into PR seasons?

Hello there everyone!

This is a topic that was brought up in another thread, so I thought I'd make one to officially discuss the options. For those that are unaware, Power Rangers is adapted from a Japanese show called Super Sentai, which was on the air for 15 seasons prior to Zuyranger, which became Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The question here is, could and should these earlier seasons be made into Power Rangers seasons? The issue is whether or not the footage is too cheesy and dated to be used, as well as whether or not the plots could be changed over or created. Personally, I think they could find a way, such as using these as Prequel seasons to MMPR or other teams. For reference, here are the seasons that have not been made into Power Rangers:

Anyways, since Disney has taken over PR, there is no chance of the pre-zyuranger series to be adapted into PR seasons. Go-onger to Dynaman is way too old though and they are way out of date. Bioman to Jetman would be the only ones that would have been adapted but we started with Zyuranger. Jetman was originally gonig to be the first one to be started by Saban but that script to be dropped due to the violence and started with Zyuranger instead.

I created five teams based on Maskman through Jetman. They are PR teams created by Jason, Trini and Zack in other countries.

I've always thought that Liveman and JAKQ would have been great to adapt. I mean the story for Liveman was one of Sentai's better plots, plus the line up is like that to Go-onger (i.e. RPM)... but instead based on animals rather than vehicles. Never really like vehicle toku, but with Liveman adapted we would have had red, blue and yellow start, with green and black coming in "Thunder Ranger" style next, with the animal theme.

I also really enjoyed JAKQ and felt that it's an original sentai that had it's own system and way of things, after Battle Fever J things just seemed to get generic in terms of Ranger colours. JAKQ had some pretty good themes, the idea of them being based on cards rather than simply just animals, colours or vehicles was a totally original idea that was unique only to that Sentai only. PR needed to adapt that, but never did.

But, of course, due to dated footage and... Disney, it will never happen.

Maybe this is a pro for having PR animated. =D Use all the past unadapted sentais.

Can't you digitally remaster all the outdated footage? Yeah Disney is too big a monopoly to do anything really. So I see your logic there

Well in theory you could digitally remaster old footage. But I feel that most of the early Sentai footage is simply too outdated to digitally remaster.

A linked analogy would be trying to get a purely mono field track on a analogue cassete (distorted and hissed), and trying to digitally remaster it as a stereo field track for a CD with all hiss and distortion removed.

Even if you manage to cut off frequencies to reduce the hiss and distortion, you can't hack off too much without loosing alot of the original content, and there's no way to heal the mono/stereo field situation.

Too dated to digitally remaster, at least that's my opinion.

Actually, I heard it was because of poor group testing. Besides, dinosaurs are more popular with kids than birds. If they did start with Jetman, PR probably wouldn't be as big as when they started with Zyu.

Instead of turning the older Sentai seasons into Power Rangers seasons, why not just dubbed the older Sentai seasons? I think the viewers might enjoy a very good dubbed Sentai show.

Well technically the suits just weren't used, but yeah. They should just make a season of that but have no connection to the regular PR series.

Well I know they used the zords and The White Ranger but I think it would have been interesting.

I've always been most fond of the Maskman suits, though I don't like those earring type things that dangle from the sides of the female Rangers' helmets; very distracting.

Personally I think that all footage from Denjiman forward has potentional. Some of you think that the footage is too old to be digitally remastered, but I don't think so. The audio wouldn't matter because most if not all of the original Japanese audio is dropped and replaced with American audio when the original source material is adapted for American audiences. If unused two-dimensional footage of Marlon Brando from the filming of the first two Superman films could be used to do something as amazing as creating a three dimensional image of Jor-El for Superman Returns, it should be possible for the old Super Sentai footage to be digitally remastered. The only limiting factor is the amount of money that Disney would be willing to spend to do that, which is obviously none because Disney is cheap and Power Rangers has such a small following these days.

Disney's contract with Toei ends with RPM. They can renew it if they want to. But otherwise Toei would need to find another producing if they want to do it animated or live action

Therefore, if someone else takes Toei's footage and tried to produce PR, Disney can sue them for infringment. The only way we will get anything is if Disney decides to make it, and only a live action season if they renew the contract with Toei.

I like the earlier Sentai suits and I think anything after the first three seasons could be adapted somehow and would be entertaining. Just my two cents.

The thing is,as long as its not called Power Rangers,any production company can do it.Look at Kamen Rider Dragon Knight.Its not Masked Rider which is a Saban production that I belive is now also owned by Disney.Since its now done by the Adness company,its a differnet show.The same can be done of Sentai.This is just my opinion though.

I totally agree as well. Especially since both females were white and blue in Jetman.

I must admit I've always thought that too. Any of the older series would make good PR seasons as long as they had inteligent writing behind them, but what an interesting idea about another company producing non-PR Sentai, oh to be involved in that.

Its not going to happen. Disney only aquired the rights to the early Sentai incarnations to prevent other companies from using them. I don't see any reason for them to adapt older Sentai's when they have new ones to adapt every year. Also I'd have to imagine most of the costumes for the early Sentai's are gone. So I don't see it as being something they can really adapt anyway.

I'm willing to bet that if the costumes are used and refilmed to make a new season (it'll never happen, but for discussion purposes) it would be interesting. Considering it appears to be the most unique Sentai/Power Rangers out there. It's not based on numbers, animals or vehicles... but playing cards.

Toei must have had a sudden rush of creativity back in 1977, because other Sentais just copied the same themes over, and PR copied that from Zyuranger onwards.

Ok it's cheesy, but it has enormous potential.

Still, it would be interesting if they used a unique theme like JAKQ did, even if it's not JAKQ, but either something else or something new. Because they do seem to just repeat either vehicles, animals or numbers alot.

A playing card theme worked pretty well for Kamen Rider Blade. (which really would be a good name for the adaptation of Kiva IMO).

I say no because the older sentai is just to dated. The props for weapons and ect. and the zords/megazords just look plain awful nowadays. The only sentai from the past, if remastered, that I see possibly working are Jetman and Maskman.
