Chapter 1
-Alexa-

“Does anyone know the answer?” A gruff voice asked out, hoping for some sort of response out his students. In the back of the classroom sat Samuel Hartman or Sam as friends called him, a senior who just wished that this class would get over. Sam was distinguished by his shaggy, mostly disheveled brown hair, green eyes, and normal build. He stood at a mere 6’2”, weighing 187 lbs. He was by no means an athlete, but he also wasn’t a skinny twig either. He was just average, normal, everyday Sam. He listened on as one of his fellow classmates, the one he constantly called a nerd, answered the teachers question.

“That’s correct Mark,” his teacher said as he continued to write upon the whiteboard. Sam was as bored as a guy could be. Pre-Calculus didn’t exactly scream fun. He was only taking it because he needed three years of math to graduate. He would have fallen asleep too, if it wasn’t for what had happened next.

The door to their classroom opened and in walked a girl who stood about 5’7”, weighing 117 lbs. She was distinguished by her long, blond hair which was pulled back in a ponytail, blue eyes, and athletic build. “Um, excuse me. But is this Mr. Edwards Pre-Calculus class?” She asked in a timid voice.

Mr. Edwards turned away from the board to see who had asked the question. At that same time Sam awoke from his semi-sleep to see who that voice belonged to. Once he saw the girl standing in the doorway his heart suddenly did laps inside of his stomach. He had felt that feeling before, and he knew what it was. He was in love, with a complete stranger no less.

“You must be Alexa,” Mr. Edwards said. He then turned to the class as if to address them. “Class, this is Alexa Devlin. She just transferred from Hubert E. L. Long High School.” Mr. Edwards then turned back to Alexa. “I believe there’s a seat open next to Sam in the back,” Mr. Edwards said as he pointed in Sam’s direction. Sam was happy that she would be sitting next to him, and even happier with Mr. Edwards’ next statement. “Sam, can you show Alexa around? I’m sure she’d like to take a tour of our campus.”

Sam’s heart almost leaped out of his chest at the remark his teacher made. “Sure thing Mr. E.,” Sam said as Alexa sat down next to him. Sam then leaned over, holding his hand out. “I’m Sam by the way. Sam Hartman,” Sam said, hoping she’d accept his handshake.

“Alexa Devlin,” She said as she shook his hand. “So, is this class as hard as I’ve heard it is?”

Sam was really happy that she was willing to converse with him. Sam never got the popular girls. They always ended up choosing the jocks over him, so he wasn’t about to let this one slip through his fingers and into a jocks hand. “Nah, it’s not as hard as some people make it out to be. Boring? Yes. Hard? No. Bu then again, when has Pre-Calculus ever been fun?” Sam smiled a bit at his joke, which caught the attention of his teacher.

“Sam, I appreciate you trying to make our new student feel like home, but can it wait until after class?” Sam heard Mr. Edwards ask.

“Sorry Mr. E. It won’t happen again.” Sam heard Alexa let out a slight giggle, which made him feel a bit at ease. Well, as long as she thinks it’s funny. Sam re-focused his attention on the problems on the board. Forty minutes later, he heard the sound he was waiting for the entire period. That sweet sound of the bell going off, indicating that class was over, and it was time for lunch.

“Make sure you read chapters four and five and do all even problems through sixty-three,” Mr. Edwards said as the class began to empty.

Students were picking up their backpacks, placing their books and binders in it before leaving the classroom. Sam exited the room next to Alexa, and soon they were in the main quad. “So, where do you want to begin?” Sam asked with a slight smile.

“Surprise me Sam,” Alexa said, returning the smile.

Thirty minutes later, the two of them were laughing together, having the time of their lives. “No really, the snake got loose and caused a school wide panic. It was hilarious!” Sam said in-between laughing. He then noticed that he had shown her everything the school had to offer. “Looks like we’ve reached the end of out tour. I hope you enjoyed it, and you can pick up your photograph of yourself in the main lobby,” Sam said in his best tour guide voice.

“Oh ha ha,” Alexa said jokingly. “I had fun with you today. Thanks for showing me around.”

“It was my pleasure. I’d do it again anytime,” Sam said in a confident voice.

“Well, if you’re gonna do that then you’ll probably need this,” Alexa said as she pulled out a piece of paper and scribbled something down on it before handing it to Sam.

“What’s this?” Sam asked, eyeing what looked like numbers on the paper.

“That’s my cell phone number. Call me next time you wanna hang out,” Alexa said as she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. “Catch you later.” With that, Alexa got up and left, leaving Sam alone in the quad.

“Thanks. I’ll make sure to call you soon!” Sam said, almost yelling as he watched her figure fade into the distance. Man, can this day get any better? Sam thought to himself as he put the piece of paper that harbored her number in his pocket. With that, he headed off towards his car which was parked in the north parking lot and drove home.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon getting home, Alexa entered her house to the sight of her father and older brother. “So, how was your first day at High School?” Her father asked, flipping the page of the newspaper he was currently reading. “Meet any cute guys yet?”

“School was fine, and yes, I did meet a cute guy,” Alexa said a bit annoyed at the comment. She then began to feel a bit hot, which annoyed her even more. “Can someone please turn down the thermostat? I’m burning up in here.”

Her father just eyed her oddly. “You know we don't have a thermostat in here,” her father said in a concerned tone. Quickly changing the subject, her father wanted to know more about this guy she had met. “So, what is his name?”

Alexa was a bit confused by the question. “What is whose name?” She asked.

“You know, that guy you met,” Her older brother, Alex quipped in.

“Oh, right. Well, his name is Sam Hartman. He showed me around campus today, and we talked and laughed about stories that happened at school. And before you go checking you list just know that he is a sweet guy, which is hard to find these days. Most guys are either self-centered, or are only in it for the sex,” Alexa said, which was totally true.

“Ok, so he’s not damned yet. Any future plans between you two?” Her father asked her.

“Let’s just drop the subject and move on, ok?” Alexa said, a bit annoyed that her father was prying in to her private life. “I have to do some homework.”

With that she began to head upstairs to her room. She could faintly here her brother in the background. “You know, I never went to a public High School and look how I turned out!”

As his voice faded, she quickly shut her door to her room and lay down on her bed. “Man. I bet Sam doesn’t have to go through this at his house everyday,” She said to herself as she turned on her radio, plugged her headphones in, and began to sing along to the music that was playing at the time. But I guess that’s just my house. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. She thought to herself as her world slowly faded away into the music.
