Unsung

Narration (Gage Evans thinking):

“Sometimes in life, you don’t get credit for the things you do. Sometimes you just can’t get a fair break. But why is it that we keep doing the good things we do? Hmmm. Maybe we’ll find out someday.”

It was a slow Tuesday evening, and Gage Evans was trying to drink away his problems. He sat alone at the counter as Susan the bartender handed him another beer.

“This is your last one for tonight,” she told Gage.

He nodded his head but didn’t reply. Gage was deep in thought.

Narration (Gage thinking):

“Sometimes, I think that if I tell everyone my secret, maybe I'd feel more appreciated.”

Gage finished his beer, and stood up, bumping into a female patron. “I’m sorry sweetheart… can I buy you a drink?”

“Uh, no,” she replied, giving Gage a dirty look. She walked on, and went up a stairway to join some of her girlfriends on the top balcony.

”She knows how to make friends.” Gage said out loud.

“Hey, don’t worry about her, she’s always like that,” Susan replied. “Been drinkin too much, that’s all.”

Gage sighed, as he walked out of the bar.

Meanwhile, upstairs, the female patron from earlier was leaning on the railing at the front of the building overlooking the road. The group of girls was too inebriated to realize that the rail was loose. One of the girls threw some food at the previously unkind girl, causing her to flinch, and push the railing over, and fall toward the ground.

Her friends screamed as they ran to the edge of the balcony, only to be greeted by their friend safe in the arms of a dark spandex-clad helmet-wearing warrior, who was levitating up toward where they stood. He put the young lady down with her friends, and asked if she was all right. The girl was speechless, but nodded at the masked figure.

The hero turned around and dropped to the ground out of site from the ladies. After the girl came to her senses, she headed toward the edge of the roof to look over. She only saw the backside of Gage, walking across the street and into the shadows.

Narration (Gage thinking):

“You notice the irony yet? This girl wanted nothing to do with me, but not 5 minutes later, I save her life, and now I’m her hero, yet I must keep my identity a secret. I guess that’s what I get for bein a Power Ranger.”

Gage walked into the Laundromat, which was below his apartment. He walked upstairs and unlocked his door. The room he entered was inefficiently designed. It was 6’x18’. His bed was at the end close to the door next to the left wall as you enter. A pathway between the bed and the right wall would take you to a stand at the foot of the bed, with an old TV on it. Behind that was a mini-fridge with a microwave on top, followed by counter space and a sink. There was no bathroom, as all the apartment dwellers shared a community bathroom located in the common area. It wasn’t very fancy, but it did provide an economically friendly place to sleep at night.

Gage laid down in his unmade bed, still wearing the clothes from the day. The day had taken its toll on him, and he was all too anxious to get some much-needed shuteye. The only bad thing is, he had to get up and do it all again tomorrow.
