Summary: When you've got nothing, yet everything, to loose, what do you do? Jessica's got someone she's cared for since she was a teen on one side of the battle, but on the other side, she has the truth and the light. What should she do? Is there even a right choice to make? What's the price for betrayal, even if it is the right thing to do?
Heads or Tails?
(Based on Pokemon: Ledgends Awakened)
“It’s time for it to end, Zero!”
“That’s what you think, boy.”
“No,” Keith shook his head solemnly, “I’m afraid that’s what I know. Effie, show me whatcha got!” He called, and his Espeon moved swiftly and gracefully in front of him. Keith’s brilliant eyes narrowed, and he declared, “There are eight of us. Each of us will take on your Pokemon. First one to loose six backs away, is that understood?”
Zero sneered at Keith’s tone, obviously disgusted by the fact that this…boy was telling him what the rules of the battle would be. However, he sucked it up and just tossed his Pokeball, “Let’s go, Magmortar!” He yelled, and a despicable grin came over his face when he saw the huge fire Pokemon appear in front of him. “Magmortar, Fire Blast!”
“Dodge and use Confusion, Effie!”
A pair of huge, brown eyes watched this battle, their owner feeling nothing confusion and pain as the battle in front of her unfolded. She wrapped her arms around her midsection and looked around her at the group of trainers beside her, then back at the battle. She had never wanted it to come to this, never wanted to stand on this side of one of Zero’s battles. Yet there she was, standing amongst a troupe of do-gooders, and she was actually one of them.
There was a time when she would have followed him to the ends of the earth, but apparently that time had long since passed. She had never wanted to betray him, though. He had saved her life nearly eleven years before, had earned her loyalty and trust, yet there she still was. It was as if the past eleven years had just flown out of the window. At least, to him they had. She could tell that was how he felt as he looked over at them, met her eyes. Who she had once been was dead in his eyes, dead and long gone.
It made her hurt.
She wouldn’t have had to be on this side of the battle, had he just toned down the experiments, stopped hurting the Pokemon she was working with. Loyalty only went so far when you hated what you were doing, and wanted nothing more than to stop it. There had been other ways to tame and train the Legendaries, but he wouldn’t hear any of them. And so she had turned her back, and walked out. Out of the horrors she had seen, and out of Team Revolution.
“Effie! Finish him off with Psy Beam!”
And that was it for Magmortar. The fire Pokemon took the one last hit, swooned, and then fainted at his master’s feet. Zero let out a snarl, and she almost stepped towards him, but a hand lightly touched her arm. When she looked back, she saw Eric looking down at her. He shook his head, and Jessica fell back in line, nodding discretely at him.
Eric had changed so much since the tussle in the cellblock, way back when they first met. He had matured, and had even joined Keith’s band to fight Team Revolution. The two of them had reconciled their differences, and even almost became friends. Well, they were on the same team and tolerated each other, if that said anything. They even had each other’s backs without question.
Oh, yes, things had changed.
Keith suddenly stepped back, and Cory stepped forwards. He called his beloved Arcanine onto the field, and the large Pokemon let out a roar.
Professor Zero narrowed his eyes. “Zangoose, go! False Swipe!”
“Zang!”
And the battle continued…
-------------------
The battle indeed continued, all right, until both the troupe and the Professor were down to two Pokemon left. Adam, whose Jolteon had been defeated by Zero’s Cacturne, stepped back with a frown on his face, and his Pokemon in his arms. It was now Justin’s turn. She stepped forwards, and released her Pokeball. Hitmonlee popped onto the field, and Zero sneered.
“I’ll stick with Cacturne.”
“Is he allowed to do that?” Justin looked back at Keith, who thought about it, then sighed.
“There’s eight of us. And he has six Pokemon. I believe it’s only fair.” He elaborated, and Justin nodded. Since he had put it that way, she agreed. She’d put her beloved Hitmonlee against that dirty Cacturne. See who came on top!
“Very well. I’ll start this off. Lee, show me a low kick!”
“Dodge and use Posion Needle!” Zero barked, and Cacturne did as he was told. Justin cursed low under her breath as the attack made contact, but cheered when Hitmonlee just bounced back, apparently not poisoned, which was always a good thing.
The Fighting Pokemon delivering three kicks to Cacturne’s face before delivering another to his stomach. His owner ordered a Hidden Power, and it was released. However, not all of the attack hit Cacturne, some of it flying past to impact the Professor. But that only made the old dude angrier. He clenched his fists.
“Solar Beam!”
“Cact!”
The attack hit, and knocked Hitmonlee down, but not out. Justin nibbled on her lip as her baby stumbled to his feet. “You okay?” She asked, and got a grunt, “Good. Now, hit him while he’s recharging! Body Slam, Take Down!”
Cacturne cried out as the attacks hit, and made decent impacts upon it. Justin nodded, “Now, finish it off! Give me a Hidden Power, and then one more Low Kick!”
But Cacturne had already fallen by the time Hidden Power was released again. Still, Hitmonlee continued with the kick, as if he was unable to realize his opponent was on the ground, unconscious. He went right over the cactus Pokemon, and headed straight for –
“Hitmonlee, stop!”
Zero held his arms over his face, knowing he was too old to move with the speed that was needed to dodge. He was already on his knees, a result of the Hidden Power attack already doing some damage, and knew that the attack was coming straight for his face. He just hoped his arms would take the blow, and his face and head would be well enough protected.
“Iron Tail!”
Steelix’s tail came out of nowhere, slapping the Fighting Type away as if it was nothing. The huge steel Pokemon stood proudly before the kneeling Professor, like a rooster protecting its flock. He was making sure that no one attacked the man again, by personally putting himself between Justin, her Pokemon, and Zero. Of course, Justin had no intention of attacking again; her baby was knocked out cold. She knelt beside him, but glared up as Jessica dashed across the field.
“Bitch! You f-cking bitch!” She yelled, lunging at the woman. However, Cory grabbed her arms, holding her back. But Justin continue to lash her anger out at the scientist, “You hurt my Hitmonlee! I don’t know why you even bothered joining us if you were just going to go back to him! Do you even care that he possibly deserved what Lee was going to give him!”
But Jessica wasn’t even listening. She was just concerned with getting over to Zero as quick as possible. As soon as she was there, she hit her knees and gingerly placed her hands onto his shoulders, like a concerned parent. Oh, how their positions had swapped. Once, he had been the one to save her; now it appeared as if it was her turn. Though the thought didn’t even register in her mind; she was too ashamed of herself.
“Oh God,” she whispered, “What have I done?”
It was her fault this had happened, her fault he was hurt. She was his second; she was to battle before him. Yet she had stepped aside when it had mattered most, and had allowed Keith’s happy little troupe to attack him head on. She could have prevented this, or at least lessened it by weakening them first. Why the hell had she turned her back on him? He had never done anything to deserve her betrayal…
“Professor? Can you move? Do you need Absol to help you?”
Zero looked up, and Jessica flinched. His eyes regarded her with all the coldness and calculations they had many years before; only this time, their positions were reversed. And he wasn’t threatening to allow her to die. Though, in his eyes, she plainly saw a wish to at least give her a little pain. She shuddered and looked away, knowing she deserved it for betraying him.
“You know the drill, Steel. Anyone who gets close.” She said as she helped Zero to his feet. She called out her Feraligatr, and turned to the group, “Steelix, protect him for me.” She said, and the huge snake curled its body protectively around the Professor once, allowing a shield to form, but it only came up to his chest, so he could still see out.
“That wasn’t a proper battle, and you all know it. How is seven on one fair? But we’ll finish it now, how does that sound? I choose Feraligtr. Pick yours.”
The group all exchanged glances, but then Mace and Josh nodded. The two stepped forwards, and Jessica took a hesitant step backwards. What had she gotten herself into? Oh well, no way she backing out now! Josh spoke.
“We never got our battle. I suppose you wouldn’t mind making it a two on two battle, seeing as how you readily attacked Hitmonlee over there.”
“Fine,” Jessica said, trying to make her voice erase the quivers that shook it, “Two on two, then. Pick your Pokemon. Now.”
“Dragonite,” Josh said, narrowing his eyes. Mace smirked.
“Ursaring.”
She swallowed. “Fine. Alright. I can do this…like I said, Feraligtr, and…” She suddenly paused. She had her adored Absol, but she was injured from the last time she had fought. Purugly was just a baby, just her pet, she didn’t fight. And her other two were knocked out cold… It appeared as if she had no choice; she’d have to bring Absol out, despite not wanting to. Feraligtr was strong, but not strong enough to take down both. “I choose Feraligtr and—”
“Glalie! Ice Beam!”
The attack hit Dragonite, and both Josh and Jessica leapt into the air. The young woman looked behind her and saw Zero leaning against Steelix’s tail, unable to climb out, with a Pokeball in his hand. The tiniest of smiles crept upon Jessica’s face at the serious frown on her teacher’s. She gave him a grateful nod, and swore he nodded back, though she wasn’t sure. She stepped back so she was beside him, and grinned.
“Feraligatr, show ‘em your hyper beam!”

Okay, I tried to get at least one character of everyone's in there. I know I got so many people OOC, including Zero, but I couldn't stop writing! Lemme know whatcha think, kay? T'ankies!
